Hi Steve,

I could not agree more, it makes absolute sense to invest in marketing now than ever before.

I guess some people unfortunately just don't get it.

Happy New Year.

Cheers

Steve, your post's title caught my attention: I just set up my twitter account and listed in my bio "The Indiana Jones to Your CorporateSpeak Jungle." Ah, synchronicity!

As for the Drucker quote and your own on differentiation (#3), I think marketing services companies need to remember that it is our job to let potential clients know our value (hat tip to D. Kennedy's _No B.S. Wealth Attraction for Entrepreneurs_). Not just in order to make a new client but to establish our role in making their company stronger. We really need to s-p-e-l-l o-u-t the connection between marketing and sales and retention. And, as I posit via my Compelling Storytelling(SM) model, we should do this not from our own business owner standpoint but from our customer's customer standpoint.

How do you and your readers accomplish making your value known and understood?

Best regards,
Chris

Of course companies should continue marketing through "difficult'" times. BUT they should be sure they're marketing SMART! This is not the time for "scattergun" approaches. Make every dollar count by first figuring out who your best prospects are—take a look at the customers who are currently buying the most from you and paying promptly, determine what their common traits are and figure out where you can find more people like them. What do they read? Where do they hang out? ...then advertise there. Forget the "flavour-of-the-week advertising vehicles, put your marketing dollars where they'll get the best results and stick with it. Businesses that can maintain a consistent marketing strategy through a recession are the ones most likely to come through bad times in great shape.
